GENESIS: THE HISTORY OF GOD'S PEOPLE

The Hebrew phrase ‘elleh toledot occurs eleven times in the book of Genesis (2:4; 5:1; 6:9; 10:1; 11:10; 11:27; 25:12; 25:19; 36:1 [36:9]; 37:2) and has been translated in many ways including “these are the generation,” “this is the family history,” “this is the history of the descendants” and “this is the account.”  The author of Genesis, traditionally believed to be Moses, used ‘elleh toledat to tell ten different stories, or accounts, of the earliest people of God.  All about the formation of a people dedicated to God, Genesis may sound like dull history, but turns out to be an exciting read because of what we learn about God.

The formation of God’s people did not happen by accident.  Beginning with creation, God is shown time and again to be working to build and develop his people.   Throughout the book of Genesis, human sinfulness and limitations threaten God’s promise to build a special people (see Genesis 12).  Each time his promise is threatened, God graciously intrudes into human history to ensure the survival and success of those he chose to follow him.  As you read this story try to identify the threats to God’s people and the actions God takes to circumvent the threats.  Also, take note of the lengths to which God will go for his people and the significant themes that arise out of God’s actions: relationships, covenant, sacrifice, redemption, and faith.
