At CCCH, we believe that God has given us what we have for a reason. And we also believe that generosity is a spiritual practice. When God talks about generosity in the Bible, over and over he mentions something called “the tithe,” which means giving back the first 10% of our income to Him. It may sound like a lot at first, but we have found tithing to be a joy, not a burden.
WHY TITHE?
1) Tithing reflects our heart
Jesus said in Matthew 6:21 that “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Tithing reflects a grateful heart that wants to give back to God a portion of what He has given us; in reality, what is already His. Tithing is our opportunity to show God that He is first in our lives. James 1:17 says that “every good and perfect gift is from above ...,” so we have an opportunity to tangibly show God He is the “owner” of our finances by giving back to Him the first of what He gives us.
2) Tithing is biblical
Long before tithing was a practice of the Israelite people, Cain and Abel, the second generation of the human race, brought an offering to the Lord. The Lord blessed Abel’s offering, but rejected Cain’s. Abel brought the “firstborn of his flock,” while Cain brought “some of the fruits of the soil” as an offering (Genesis 4:3-5). God wants to be first.
Leviticus 27:30 (NIV)
A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.
Malachi 3:10 (NIV)
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.
3) Tithing is a benefit
God’s kingdom is built on multiplication, not division. God uses the tithe as an investment where everyone involved gets a return on the investment. Obviously, the church and the Kingdom are blessed, and yet God’s nature is to also bless the giver. This principle is highlighted in the passage below.
2 Corinthians 9:10-12 (New Living Translation)
For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God.
Ways to Give:
Option 1: Worship Service Offering Collection
During our Sunday worship services you may give your tithe or additional gifts when the offering bags are passed down each row. For your convenience, there are offering envelopes in the card holders on the seat backs in the Worship Center. If you would like to have offering envelopes mailed to your home on a monthly basis, please contact the church office. We are happy to provide this service as a courtesy to you.
Option 2: Electronic Giving
You may give online here. You may set up ongoing regular gifts from your checking or savings account; or a debit or credit card. Or, you can make a one-time gift. We ask that the credit card option only be used by those who pay your entire balance every month. We strongly discourage those who have ongoing credit card debt from tithing via a credit card. To give online, click here. You may also complete a form which is available in the foyer (or click here) to initiate, stop, or change automatic giving. The form can be mailed to the church office, or put in an envelope and dropped into the offering bag.
Option 3: Personal Online Banking
You can submit your tithe and any additional gifts through your personal bank’s online bill payment service (if this is a service your bank provides). Indicate “Christian Church of Clarendon Hills” as your payee, specify your name as the account, and use the following information for the payee address:
Christian Church of Clarendon Hills
